The New Hampshire School Social Workers Association
would like to extend its heartfelt condolences to our neighbors in Maine who have been impacted by the recent mass shooting.
The NHSSWA has compiled a list of resources to support each other,
as well as school staff, students and families:
When tragedies occur, we all respond to them differently. If you would like to have a discussion in your class about what happened, here are some suggestions to make the discussion appropriate and helpful:
1. Limit the time (ex. let's take 10 minutes to talk about this)
2. Allow for a brief discussion of facts, then focus on how those in your classroom are feeling 3. Remind students that everyone handles trauma differently, there is no right or wrong way to feel
4. Make sure the discussion is student driven
5. Thank students for sharing, remind them that they can access the school supports; school social workers, school counselors, school nurses, if they would like to take a quick break.
The School Social Workers Association of America has published Resolution Statements to support these conversations:
● A Public Health Approach to School Safety & Violence Prevention
● BEST PRACTICES IN SUPPORTING AND ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS WHO EXPERIENCE GRIEF
